Therefore, it can impair your driving skills. Anytime the skills needed to drive safely are impaired, even slightly, the chances of having an auto crash increase. Specifically, studies have found that marijuana use affects the drivers concentration and ability to perceive time and distance. This may lead to poor speed control, drowsiness, distraction, and the inability to read road signs accurately. The Chances of Crashing Increases More than one research study has found a direct link between THC (the psychoactive chemical in marijuana) concentration in the blood and impaired driving skills. An analysis of several studies has found that the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle crash significantly increases after using marijuana. Another meta-analysis estimates that the risk of a crash that results in serious injury or death doubles after marijuana use. In the 2015 Traffic Safety Facts: Drug and Alcohol Crash Risk report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that THC increased crash risk by 1.25 times. This figure took into account contributing factors such as alcohol use and testing procedures for intoxication, so it is actually lower than some contradictory reports. Some studies also note that high-risk groups for car accidents are those most likely to use marijuana. Most notably, this is young men in their late teens and 20s. This could play a factor in some of the statistics as well. Teenage Marijuana Use by the Numbers Higher Levels, Higher Risks When drivers are involved in auto crashes, the drivers with THC in their blood are more likely to be the driver responsible for the accidents. This is compared to drivers who were not using drugs or alcohol. It is particularly true when THC is found at higher levels. When marijuana use is combined with alcohol, the risk of having a highway mishap is significantly greater â" much greater than with either drug used by itself. With the two combined their effect on driving skills are not added, they are multiplied, research shows. Driving While Stoned Is Becoming Common Research from the NHTSA indicates that when drivers are killed in motor vehicle crashes, drugs and alcohol are involved about 11 percent of the time. The NHTSA report also shows an increase in the number of drivers who have tested positive for marijuana. They state that one in four drivers tested had THC in their system. Increases in driving while under the influence of marijuana is attributed to the recent legalization and popularization of medical and recreational cannabis in many U.S. states. Some drivers who use marijuana claim that smoking weed actually improves their concentration and therefore, their driving skills. Researchers have concluded that this might be true for the first few minutes of driving. However, marijuana users can soon become weary, bored, or distracted and their attention can begin to drift. Problems With These Studies The NHTSA, CDC, and almost every researcher that studies this issue do note that there are concerns with the marijuana-impaired driving statistics. One glaring problem is the testing procedures because THC can be detected in a persons system for days or weeks at a time. Unlike roadside tests for blood alcohol content, the tests currently used for marijuana can pick up traces even if the person is not impaired at the time of a crash. They may have smoked the day before or even earlier and the tests will still be positive. The CDC notes that multiple drugs in a persons system make it difficult to determine which contributed to a crash. Also, drivers are not always tested for drugs, particularly if they already have an illegal blood alcohol concentration level. All of these factors can throw off data used in scientific studies. The Risks Do Remain Despite these concerns, the research does show that marijuana impairs a persons ability to drive. Also, though the laws vary by state, it is illegal to drive impaired in the United States. Using marijuana and driving while impaired can have serious legal consequences. Converting Polar to Cartesian Equations in Five Easy Steps
If polar equations have you second-guessing your future as a nuclear physicist, fret not! Almost every Pre-Calculus student I have tutored has struggled here, and it isnââ¬â¢t surprising at all. Remember the first time you saw an equation and were introduced to these strange x and y variables? It may seem like second nature now, but you were learning about a whole new way to communicate about points and curves. Polar equations are no different. And I have good news! You already have all the tools you need to learn to express equations in polar form. In fact, youââ¬â¢ve been learning them for years; you have just been using them differently. Today, Iââ¬â¢ll discuss a foolproof method -- Cambridge Coachingââ¬â¢s Five Step Process for converting polar to Cartesian equations. Why do Polar Coordinates and Equations exist? Polar coordinates exist to make it easier to communicate where a point is located. Letââ¬â¢s look at a quick example. Ignore the circles on the plot for a second and picture the rectangular system youââ¬â¢re familiar with. Where would you put the point (3,4)? If you would put it by the red dot, youââ¬â¢re correct. By now, you know that the red dot can also be represented as (5,0.92) in polar coordinates. If we wanted to move the dot to the 30à ° line, while maintaining our distance of 5 units from the origin (the blue dot), we could simply express it as (5,30à °) or (5,ð â¦/6) in polar coordinates. If we were to express it in rectangular coordinates, the calculation would require a few extra steps. So, although polar coordinates seem to complicate things when you are first introduced to them, learning to use them can simplify math for you quite a bit! Similarly, converting an equation from polar to rectangular form and vice versa can help you express a curve more simply. The Five Step Method Follow these five steps to convert equations between the polar and rectangular systems. Step 1: Identify the form of your equation A quick glance at your equation should tell you what form it is in. If it contains rs and à ¸s, it is in polar form. If it contains xs and ys, it is in rectangular form. Step 2: State your goal If your equation is in polar form, your goal is to convert it in such a way that you are only left with xs and ys. If it is in rectangular form, your goal is to only have rs and à ¸s. It sounds simple, but reminding yourself of your goal will help you avoid getting stuck half way through converting your equation (or going around in circles). Step 3: Examine your equation Now, take a moment to examine your equation. Here are some key components you should be looking for. If they are not present in your equation, you should be thinking about how you might be able to make them appear. Step 4: Substitute away! Bearing in mind the goal you set in Step 2, begin to substitute. Step 5: Combine like terms and complete squares (where needed) Simplify your equation by combining like terms. Where appropriate, mostly if you have x2s and y2s, think about completing the square. Where possible, a fully simplified equation will express r in terms of à ¸ or y in terms of x, but this will sometimes be impossible without truly ridiculous amounts of manipulation. Here are some examples! Letââ¬â¢s apply this method to a few examples. Example 1: 5r=sin(à ¸) Step 1: This is a polar equation. Step 2: Our goal is to arrive at an equation that only contains x and y terms. Step 3: Looking at the equation above, the right-hand side (RHS) could turn into rsin(à ¸), but is missing an r term. The left-hand side (LHS) could turn into 5r2, but is also missing an r term. Aha! Since both the LHS and RHS are missing the same term, letââ¬â¢s multiply both sides by r. 5r=sin(à ¸) 5r2=rsin(à ¸) Step 4: Now that we have an equation with terms that can be converted easily, we can begin to substitute. 5r2=rsin(à ¸) 5(x2+y2)=y Step 5: Finally, we combine like terms and simplify the equation. Our result is mostly simplified, but we can take a few more steps. Some mathematicians will ask that the RHS be set to zero if the equation is truly simplified. Others will ask that any recurring term be factored out. All three equations below are in varying degrees of simplification. 5(x2+y2)=y 5x2+5y2-y=0 5x2+y(5y-1)=0 Example 2: 3r-cos2(à ¸)=sin2(à ¸) Step 1: This is a polar equation. Step 2: Our goal is to arrive at an equation that only contains x and y terms. Step 3: Looking at the equation above, letââ¬â¢s first rearrange it so that the trigonometric terms are on the RHS. 3r-cos2(à ¸)=sin2(à ¸) 3r=sin2(à ¸)+cos2(à ¸) See anything familiar? The RHS can be simplified to 1 using a pythagorean identity. 3r=1 How can we turn the LHS into r2? We have two options: we can either multiply both sides by r or square both sides. Multiplying both side by r would mean that the RHS cannot be easily converted. If we square both sides instead, the equation is easier to solve. (3r)2=12 9r2=1 Step 4: Now that we have an equation with terms that can be converted easily, we can begin to substitute. 9r2=1 9(x2+y2)=1 Step 5: Finally, we combine like terms and simplify the equation. Notice that you will arrive at the equation for a circle with a radius of 1/3. Wasnââ¬â¢t 9r2=1 or r=1/3 a simpler way to show it? This is why polar equations can be so helpful! 9(x2+y2)=1 x2+y2=1/9 Example 3: x2+3x+y2=6 Step 1: This is a rectangular equation. Step 2: Our goal is to arrive at an equation that only contains r and à ¸ terms. Converting from rectangular form to polar form is much easier! Step 3: Looking at the equation above, we can group the second-order terms in preparation to convert them to r2. x2+3x+y2=6 (x2+y2)+3x=6 Step 4: Substitute for all x and y terms. (x2+y2)+3x=6 r2+3rcos(à ¸)=6 Step 5: We could take the simplification on step further here, but that is not necessary. Both answers have been shown below. r2+3rcos(à ¸)=6 r(r+3cos(à ¸))=6 And there you have it! The Civil War: North versus South Sectional conflict in the United States between northern and southern territory lead to one of the bloodiest battles in Americaââ¬â¢s history. The two sides fought over the power of the national government each side arguing whether or not it had the power to abolish slavery in the South. The disagreement lead the seceding of southern states from the Union and the formation of the Confederacy. The Civil War began between the two forces on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay and only escalated from there. Each side had advantages and disadvantages, those of which affected the course of the Civil War, with the North ultimately winning. Numerous disadvantages plagued the South during the Civil War including a lack of supplies and proper funding. The absence of supplies for the soldiers in the war were caused by lack of transportation, an economy with an unhelpful focus, and no agricultural or livestock production (Boyer 434). The problems with transportation and agricultural production were a result from the Union army sabotaging what little the South had previous to the war. Furthermore, the focus of the southern economy was on tobacco and cotton which were not beneficial during the war. The Confederate Army lacked food, proper hygiene, clothes, and more, all of which lead to the death of many soldiers. Improper funds also harmed the South during the Civil War. In response to the absence of money, the Confederate Army created paper currency to help the economy during the war but ended up only creating a large amount of inflation. After printing one billion dollars, the Confederacy suffered an inflation rate of over 9,000 percent (Boyer 435). Not only did the South lack basic supplies, they lacked funding leading them to be at a disadvantage to the No rth. Overseas, you can see the juxtaposition of American pop culture on the older modes of Asian thought and society. Here, New Age religions find new excuses in Asian religions and philosophies and Anime is appears regularly on Saturday morning cartoons. Often, this juxtaposition becomes turbulent as the younger generations are caught between two seemingly opposing cultures. As a result, crime rates rise with the integration of Western ideals and culture into Asian society. The 1930s were a decade of great change politically, economically, and socially. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl wore raw the nerves of the people, and our true strength was shown. From it arose John Steinbeck, a storyteller of the Okies and their hardships. His books, especially The Grapes of Wrath, are reflections of what really went on in the 1930s. John Steinbeck did not write about what he had previously read, he instead wrote what he experienced through his travels with the migrant workers. His method was not to present himself notebook in hand and interview people. Instead he worked and traveled with the migrants as one of them, living as they did and arousing no suspicion from employers militantly alert againstâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Steinbeck had been aware of the labor problems in his state of California, but for these articles he wanted to experience it firsthand. For inspiration for his articles, and also what would turn out to be the inspiration for Gra pes of Wrath, he visited the farms outside his native Salinas and also visited the squatter camps near Bakersfield (Lisca 12-14). These visits to the squatter camps led to his creation of the Weedpatch camp in Grapes of Wrath. A few years later, Steinbeck returned to California to write Grapes of Wrath and to further research the flawed California labor. He was not, however, merely researching materials for his next book, but passionately involved in the suffering and injustice (Lisca 16). His fervor for the migrant cause almost lead him to abandon his recent writing and revise Of Mice and Men and sell it so he could donate to money to the migrant workers. In early September 1936, Steinbeck went back to Salinas to find that there was a violent clash between growers and workers over a strike that resulted in riots and killings. This turned Steinbeck upside down, because now it was not only something happening in California, but was happening in the town where he grew up. Gender Inequality and Education World Health Organization defines gender inequality as ââ¬â¢the difference between men and women which systematically empowers one group to detriment of the other. ââ¬â¢1 For an example, throughout in world, women have lower cash income on average than men. Gender values and norms can give rise to gender inequalities which when combined with gender differences give rise to inequalities between men and women in access to education. For example Sri Lanka and Maldives come up with very high education-participation ratio which is extra-ordinary. And I have discussed it in one of group-mate discussion post that Sri Lanka is a country where Education is given one of higher priority and facilitated free of cost by the government from the pre-primary level up-to university level. Maldives is a rich and well established state and the education is on top priority by the government which makes it easily and highly accessible to everyone. Talking about access to internet and mobile phone per hundred population, a surprising fact comes up that the users of these devices are higher in rich and developed countries but especially the countries in European region, for example Finland, Croatia, Germany, Italy, etc. But we also observe that the use of mobile phone is very much higher if compare them with internet usage. The main reason can be the very easy and lower cost of access to mobile phones everywhere as it is one of the most useable devices for social-communication in the world. On the other hand, accessing to internet is not always easy and available in all parts within a country, especially in rural areas and it can be very expensive to afford sometimes. If I talk about my country, Pakistan, being the second largest Muslim country after Indonesia, gender inequality in education still exists despite the Noble Quranââ¬â¢s spirit of ââ¬Å"Iqraâ⬠(Read/Study). The main reasons for holding back gender equality of education are gender discrimination, early marriage and pregnancy, cultural stereotypes, etc. As a conclusion I believe achieving education for all requires a truly global commitment. A lot of work needs to be done in this aspect and to make complete the goals of the United Nationsââ¬â¢ Millennium Development Program for achieving universal primary education, promotion gender equality and empowering women.
